Popular Opinion

The people writing and speaking about Trump's authoritarianism range from established media to political blogs to people living under authoritarian regimes in other countries.  The following is just a small sampling of the articles and videos explaining Trump's authoritarian behavior.

The Atlantic: "Donald Trump's Authoritarian Politics of Memory" by Ruth Ben-Ghiat
"Driven by opportunism, pragmatism, or fear, many begin to forget that they used to think certain things were unacceptable."
The Establishment: "Lessons from Singapore on Trump's Authoritarian America" by Kristen Han
"Your country feels less and less like it belongs to you, and more like a place in which you are allowed to live only as long as you play nice and stay obedient. It’s disempowering, discouraging people from taking action and perpetuating the vicious cycle."
Irish Times: "President Donald Trump is an Authoritarian" by Fintan O'Toole
"But the Trump project runs up against even the most fundamental contradictions. Trump is an anarcho-authoritarian. To his fans he is the big man, the Duce, the sole saviour of a nation that is on its way to hell in a handcart. And he will surely deliver on the authoritarian side of his agenda."
The New Republic: "Donald Trump is Becoming an Authoritarian Leader Right Before Our Eyes" by Jeff Heer

"Trump’s self-centered decision process is authoritarianism, and it’s anything but irrational. He campaigned in an authoritarian style, with rallies where he riled up large crowds to jeer at the press and protesters. One of the defining tactics of his campaign was disinformation, coupled with accusations of the same against the media. That hasn’t changed now that Trump is president. "
The New York Times: "Beyond Lying: Donald Trump's Authoritarian Reality" by Jason Stanley
"Donald Trump is trying to define a simple reality as a means to express his power. The goal is to define a reality that justifies his value system, thereby changing the value systems of his audience."
Politico: "Evan McMullin: Trump Using Authoritarian Playbook" by Louis Nelson
"'He had questioned judicial independence, threatened the freedom of the press, called for violating Muslims’ equal protection under the law, promised the use of torture and attacked Americans based on their gender, race and religion,'"
Truthdig: "Normalizing Donald Trump's Authoritarianism Is Not an Option"  by Henry A. Giroux
"Trump and his administration of extremists epitomize the dire dangers posed by those who longed to rule American society without resistance, dominate its major political parties, and secure uncontested control of its commanding political, cultural, and economic institutions."

The First Weekend and "Alternative Facts"

The weekend following Donald Trump's inauguration saw several examples of authoritarianism perpetuated by the White House. It began with Press Secretary Sean Spicer (who has been trending on Twitter every since) haranguing the press for their accurate reporting of low crowd numbers during the inauguration. This was followed by Donald Trump and Kellyanne Conway reiterating the lie that Trump's inauguration drew crowds at least as large as Barrack Obama's.  Conway clinched the authoritarianism with her statement about Spicer "alternative facts" - thus drawing immediate comparisons to George Orwell's 1984.

Trump's authoritarianism also included hiring people to follow him to the CIA and applaud his conference there.

All these actions tie into an authoritarian's need for adulation and Trump's narrative that he's a populist and he's superior to all other politicians and presidents.  The White House, under Trump's direction, needs Trump to be popular and beloved of the people, and will engineer events, deny facts, and flat out lie in support of that narrative.

There's also the larger political purpose which is distancing Trump's die hard supporters from legitimate media thus preparing the way for propaganda agents in the White House and exhausting everyone else before they start on the bigger lies and controversies.
